Israel, archaeology, and religion

From the luminous frenzy of the Mediterranean to the silent depths of the earth, the journey begins in Tel Aviv, where the ancient stone of the port of Jaffa preserves millennia of layers beneath a cutting-edge metropolis. From here, the route winds inland, descending along the Jordan Valley to Qasr al-Yahud, right along the border with Jordan: the site where tradition places the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist. Along the silt-laden banks of the river, the desert landscape hums with palpable spirituality, as early monastic relics and the ruins of Byzantine chapels emerge from the dust.
The ascent toward Jerusalem leads straight into the beating heart of this land. The most profound revelation unfolds beneath the surface, beyond the plaza crowded with prayers: an exclusive descent into the subterranean labyrinth of the Western Wall Tunnels. Walking alongside the Herodian foundations means brushing against cyclopean ashlar blocks like the Western Stone, weighing hundreds of tons and set with a millimeter precision that defies ancient physics. Recent excavations have unearthed monumental halls, Roman-era drainage systems from Aelia Capitolina, and ritual mikva'ot hidden from view for centuries. Archaeologists continue to peel back superimposed layers that rewind the tape of time: from the Crusader and Umayyad periods back through the Second Temple and down to the First Temple era, where every ceramic shard and coin carries a direct echo of biblical narratives.
The journey concludes by descending to the lowest point on Earth, the Dead Sea. Amid mineral-white salt formations drifting on dense, still waters, the cliffs of Qumran—where the famed Dead Sea Scrolls were uncovered in 1947—and the rugged plateau fortress of Masada loom nearby. It is the ideal finale to an itinerary that bridges scientific rigor and mystical awe, leaving the traveler with the sheer magnitude of a land where archaeological research is never just a study of the past, but an enduring dialogue with the soul of history.
